RF microneedling: how the devices actually differ

RF microneedling is performed on a dozen different platforms with different names on the housing. The principle is the same everywhere: microneedles deliver radiofrequency energy into the dermis and the skin responds by producing new collagen. The difference is in the engineering, and that is what decides comfort, recovery time and safety for darker skin.

What all platforms have in common

Let us start with the main point: these devices share far more than they differ. All of them work fractionally: microneedles pass through the epidermis and deliver radiofrequency into the dermis. The tissue heats up, remodelling starts and damaged fibres are replaced by new collagen.

The indications overlap almost completely: skin density, facial contour, pores, acne marks, fine lines, stretch marks and scars on the body. So the question is rarely about the brand; it is about how the device delivers its energy.

Needle insulation is the key parameter

A needle is either insulated along its full length or it is not, and that decides where the energy is released.

  • An insulated needle releases radiofrequency only at the tip, at a set depth. The epidermis is not overheated, so the risk of burns and post-inflammatory pigmentation is minimal.
  • A non-insulated needle releases part of the energy on the way in, including the superficial layers. The treatment feels stronger, redness lasts longer, and on darker or tanned skin the settings need care.

In Dubai this is not theory: most patients here have phototype three to five and a tan for most of the year.

Depth and energy delivery

The second parameter is depth. Most platforms work down to 3 to 4 mm on the face, and body handpieces go deeper. More millimetres does not mean better: on the face, neck and eye area precision matters more than the maximum.

The third parameter is how the energy is applied. Pulsed delivery heats quickly; micro-pulsed delivery uses a series of short controlled pulses that warm the dermis evenly to a therapeutic 41 to 43 degrees. That evenness is what makes the result predictable and decides how many days the redness lasts.
